The Listeners, painting by Jeffrey Smart
Jeffrey Smart studied at the South Australian School of Art and later at the Academie Montmartre and La Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Resident in Italy since 1965, Smart was a realist painter with a powerful sense of colour and unusual juxtapositions. His subject matter and its composition engage the viewer in the sinister or disturbing side of the modern world.
In The Listeners a sole figure, lying in a field, looks towards a satellite dish against dark billowing clouds on the horizon, creating a scene which offers many opportunities for interpretation.
